I wanted to make some candle holders to give as presents and found a nice pattern by Virrkpannan. They are crochetet over glas jars so it is also a nice recycle object.
For these you use any yarn you want and appropriate hook. My jars became slimmer at the top so I went down 1/2 hook size doing the slimmer part.
Since the pattern is in swedish here is a translation. We start with the turqouise ones:
R 1: Chain (ch) 2. 7 single crochets (sc) in second ch from hook. Slip stitch (sl) in first ch. (7 stitches)
R 2: Ch 1. 2 sc in every stitch. Sl in first ch. (14 st)
R 3: Ch 1. 1 sc in first st, 2 sc in next. Repeat whole round. Sl in first ch. (21 st)
R 4: Ch 1 1 sc in each of next 2 st, 2 sc in next. Repeat whole round. Sl in first st. (28 st).
Continue these rounds increasing number of stitches with only 1 sc in with one for each round until your bottom is big enough. It should be almost 1 cm or 1/2 inch smaller than bottom of jar. You want to have to stretch the costume onto the jar when done.
Next round: Ch 1. 1 sc in every stitch, join with sl in first ch. I made mine in back loop for defined edge.
Repeat the row one more time.
Lace:
R 1: Ch 3, 2 double crochets (dc) in same stitch. Skip 2 stitches. 3 dc in next. Repeat rest of round. You might have to only skip 1 stitch at end depending on how many stitches you have. Join with sl in top ch in beginning of round.
R 2: Sl into first dc. Ch 3. 2 dc in same stitch. 3 dc in middle dc of next cluster. Repeat rest of row.
Repeat R 2 as many rounds as needed for your jar.
Now make a couple of rounds like this: Ch 3, 1 dc in every stitch rest of row. Join with sl in last ch in beginning of row. You decide how may rows look good on your jar.
If you want to add a bow make a round with holes like this: Ch 3, 1 dc in nest st, ch 1, skip 1 stitch, 1 dc in each of next 2 stitches. Repeat rest of round.
Lace edging:
Ch 1, 1 sc in same stith. Skip 1 stitch. 5 dc in next, skip 1 stitch, 1 sc in next, skip 1 st, 5 dc in next. Repeat rest of round. Join with sl. Fasten off and weave in ends.
If you want to make a string from chains and weave in holes and tie a bow. Or use a nice ribbon. Take a look at the pictures in the link to the swedish pattern, there are some nice ones there!
The white one as another type of lace. I made it like this:
R 1 is same as in the turqouise.
R 2: Sl in each of first 2 dc from previous round and sl inbetween first and second cluster of dc. Ch 3, 2 dc in same space. 3 dc in next space betwwen clusters. Repeat rest of round. Join with sl in top of ch in beginning of round.
Repeat R 2 as many times as needed for your jar.
I really liked this project. It was quick, I made all three watching TV last night, and I can think of a million ways to vary them!
